Weekly Devlog - #3
New Platforms
We put in a lot of work this week to bring CozyTyper to Linux and MacOS! We're very excited to be able to bring our game to a wider audience, and hope that more of you will be able to enjoy the game as a result of this! The WebGL is still available for anyone to try in their browser, but for the best typing experience you are going to want to download the standalone version for your OS!
New Typing Modes
When it comes to typing games, there are a lot of ways to implement error correction. To backspace or not to backspace seems to be the big question. CozyTyper originally did not allow you to progress past an error, so you would just retype the key to continue, but now that is just one of three modes available. Classic mode, YOTO mode and correction mode were made in an attempt to cover the different options.
Text Cursor Implementation
When we first started this project we had envisioned the typing to be as stripped back and clean looking as possible, so we experimented by removing the text cursor. It was weird at first but once we got he hang of it we liked it, but when we sent out playtest the feedback strongly called for a text cursor. Once we added it in, we saw what the game had been missing! The new box cursor is my favorite as we made it to emulate the terminal cursor I like so much, I'm excited to hear about what everyone's favourite is!
Sound Design
Finding error sounds that fit in with the audio/visual aesthetic was a challenge! We wanted to be able to let a user know that they had made a mistake, without jarring them out of the cozy vibe. We started from a list of about 20, and we worked it down to 2. Just like with the cursor, we are excited to hear what everyone's preferred error sound is!
Visuals
This week, we took a look at the visuals of CozyTyper and decided to make some changes to the color scheme. We decided to change the pop-ups to a softer yellow color, and reorganised the settings menu for better spacing and the room to add more options for gameplay! Our buttons also had a bit of a glow-up, and now look a lot cleaner, as well as our panels.
As part of this redesign, we also added our own custom cursor, tooltips, and an overlay that explains some of the game's functionality and gameplay. We hope this helps people find and use the radio/keyboard buttons more easily, and better understand the new game modes that were implemented this week.
